The importance of routine appointments

Check-ups are important for maintaining good oral hygiene and health. Regular check-ups will help detect any dental problems ahead of time. Lysaght Dental recommend you get a check-up every six months.

There are 2 parts to a routine dental visit:

1: The Examination / Check-up

During your check-up we will:

  • Evaluate your overall health and oral hygiene
  • Take a full dental base chart of your teeth
  • Assess your need for tooth restoration or tooth replacement
  • Check your bite and jaw for problems
  • Take dental X-rays or, if necessary, do other diagnostic procedures
  • Complete a FREE oral cancer screening
  • Create a treatment plan listing any treatments required and costs involved.

2: The Scale & Polish / Cleaning:

Brushing and flossing help clean the plaque from your teeth, but you can't remove tartar at home. During the cleaning, we will use special tools to remove tartar and all deposits. This is called scaling. After your teeth are scaled, they may be polished. In most cases, a gritty paste is used for this. It helps to remove any surface stains on your teeth.

What you should do between visits:

Be sure to take care of your teeth and gums between regular dental visits. Plaque is always forming on your teeth, but you can get rid of it by brushing and flossing regularly.

Here are some tips for good oral care at home:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes using a toothpaste that contains fluoride. Spit out the toothpaste but do not rinse.
  • Floss at least once a day.
  • Use mouthwash after meals to help get rid of plaque bacteria. This will also help to freshen breath.
